Whiplash, Whiplash Associated Disorders (WAD), Cervical Acceleration/Deceleration injury (CAD)

A sudden forced movement of the head or neck in any direction and the resulting “rebound” in the opposite direction is known as whiplash. This sudden “whipping” motion injures the surrounding and supporting tissues of the neck and head. Muscles react by tightening and contracting, creating muscle fatigue, which can result in pain and stiffness. Severe whiplash can also be associated with injury to the intervertebral joints, discs, ligaments, muscles, and nerve roots.

Symptoms include:

  • Headaches, neck pain, back pain and shoulder pain
  • In traumas associated with whiplash, one may also experience arm pain, leg pain, mid-back (thoracic) pain and lower back pain

Note: in cases with a variety of symptoms such as headaches, vertigo (dizziness) irritability, fatigue, ringing of the ears, balance issues, sensitivity to light and/or noise, difficulty concentrating and/or remembering things a concussion must be ruled out.

The Causes of Whiplash

Car accidents are the most common cause of whiplash, but it can also occur with falls, sports injuries, work injuries, or other incidents.

How Our Doctors Can Help You

Typically, the initial (Acute/Inflammatory) phase of whiplash is addressed at most doctors’ offices and emergency rooms. However, the continued phases of healing (Repair and Rehabilitation) are neglected, which impairs healing and sets the stage for long-term problems. Provance Chiropractic offers a variety of options help you get relief and improve healing, throughout all Phases of Healing.

Your treatment plan may include:

  • Chiropractic manipulation (adjustments) of the region, to restore segmental motion, circulation of nutrients via blood flow, and to improve healing of the soft tissue and disc
  • Our doctors may utilize the Leander Flexion Distraction Table, which aids in relief of spinal disc conditions.  Flexion-Distraction is designed to separate the joint surfaces and elongate the surrounding soft tissues
  • We also utilize physical modalities such as Interferential Current, Ultrasound Therapy, and specific spinal healing exercises (rehabilitation).
  • Additionally, our doctors can prescribe TEN’s units, topical lotions and nutritional supplements.
